PostSubject: Keeping Bowls from Splitting   Fri Jan 10, 2014 7:33 pm

Hey guys and girls. I have been experimenting with different drying processes and wanted to see if anybody else had luck with this process. After doing alot of reading I finally tried something myself (i hope this hasn't been discussed before so I don't look dumb)
Anyways i made some pear tree bowls recently. The moisture content was 37% when I started. I cut the bowls down to 1/4 to 3/8 thick. I also made sure to keep the pith dead center through the bowls. One bowl i just let split just to see the time it took. This was kept in doors for three days and split horribly. Then I sealed another bowl entirely and kept inside for three days. It split too. This was expected but I am just testing. Now I have one that has made it almost seven days with no split. The only thing I did was seal the end grain growth rings. Nothing else. I put NO sealer on the remainder of the bowl, just the pith areas inside and out. My idea was to slow the dumping of moisture through the end grain yet still allow moisture to escape the rest of the wood. So far so good. Moisture content is at 16% now. Please give me your ample feed back for I am craving for knowledge and punishment.

That's how I do mine. It's like a 4 slice with the end grain pieces getting the anchor seal
