PostSubject: Glue   Thu Feb 10, 2011 12:11 pm

I'm new to your group and have just started to take up wood turning again after about 50 years off. Things sure have changed.

I want to start turning some bowls using the glue block method versus the chuck method. Where can I find some CA glue and accelerator? The big box stores have no clue and Royall Hardware usually carries Titebond but they are out now and Ace only carries the "thin" version and no accelerator. Is the accelerator necessary for other than reducing the set time?

Thanks,

Norm,

I haven't been able to find any place around here my self that carries the accelerator, or larger size bottles of CA. I can tell you that a lot of us are relying on Man Tool up in Columbia these days for those oddities that we come up with. We have a list of some favorite vender's that have been tried and found quite reliable: http://www.charlestownewoodturners.com/f10-favorite-venders I personally make a trip at least twice a year up to NC and visit a Klingspor's store there. When I make the trip I usually announce that I'm heading there and I'm willing to pick up things for peeps if they need them. Not sure when my next trip will be. I hate having to mail order, but it's pretty much the way it goes with our woodcraft being gone. I recommend signing up for all kinds of free catalogs from the woodworking stores that you can. You would be surprised how many of them will offer free shipping or some kind of discount. Every month someone has some kind of deal.

Good luck on your search, and if you do happen to find someone local PLEASE let us know who Smile

If you are going to use the glue for glue blocks, I would recommend using something like Titebond II or III. It will take longer to cure than CA, but I would trust it a lot more than CA for this function. This is assuming that you will be doing a long grain to long grain glue up. I wouldn't recommend end grain glue ups for a glue block.
